The Miracle of Movement (a poem)

Baby steps count
And as you number don’t just count them
Understand them…
That they are the most exhilarating.
First steps taken toward a dream
Embed themselves in heart in such a special way.
And if it were remembered to leave something not taken
On the altar for granted
Surely those first steps would be the moments we’d all leave.
The moment when courage and curiosity mixed and made
A stumbling bumbling attempt into something like
Nothing less than activated faith.
After awhile now we walk it, hop it, skip it, jog it,
Run it at top speed in any combination of these
With no wonder…
Barely any thought to all the covered ground
But in the beginning we prayed
Out loud and silent
For the ample balance it took to take
Those first steps
Oh my Lord, didn’t we see You
Use our guts to move our feet
And make the miracle of movement!
