Common Sense Kills Faith

images-4“If you are to ever wholeheartedly embrace the Word & Will of God for your life, common sense will be your greatest stumbling block.”

Even as I typed out that statement in the last Blog post, I felt the “cringe” vibe.

Go ahead, be honest.  Your inner critic cringed a little bit when you read that, didn’t it?  I mean, let’s be real about it.  We live in the age where nobody but nobody ought to be walking around denying the universal need for common sense.

But what about us?  What about Christians?  Us who believe we are shepherded by an invisible God?  Us who pray continually to a God Who answers through the silent tellings of intuition?  Us who must recognize the code of the indecodable?

I’m talking about the led by the Spirit us who have staked our lives on someOne we have not, cannot, will not see until….

Until when?  When He comes back in a blaze of glory with all the host of Heaven with Him?  When the dead in Christ rise first and living Believers rise to meet them in the air?

What kind of sense does that make?  Is that so common?  No.  Not at all.  We, the faith generated, faith driven, faith led people of the Living God were not created by Him to make sense of the world, but of the things of His Kingdom.

If faith is the enemy to anything, it must first be to common sense.

Think of Abraham.  God’s call for him to leave his homeland wouldn’t have even made the front page of the Haran News & Record had God told him where he was going.  He didn’t.  “Leave, Abraham.  Leave your country, your kindred, & all your father’s house.  Hurry, now.  Get going.  Oh, and by the way, I’ll tell you where you’re headed later on, which is when I’m going to bless you for all this, too.” says the Lord.

A-hem…

Think of Noah.  He began to build, colossally, on a very jarring, if not confusing Word from God: something about destroying all flesh except him, & his family & two of every beast?  In an ark?  Together for 40 days & nights plus however long it took that dove to not come back…

Needless to say, these are extremely extraordinary conditions but we Believers believe it because it is in the Word that we Believe.

Think of Jonah.  The disobedient runaway, swallowed (not eaten) by a great fish who vomited him up three days later because he prayed & needed to get to Nineveh to preach his trial sermon?…

If you believe that, I’m telling you, you’re already so short on common sense you ought not to even flinch when it’s said in the context I said it in before.

But what was that context anyway?

Listen…relying on the world and all its systems of provision, protection, & promotion is idolatry.  You can’t (and won’t) be the Believer & Benefactor of the abundant things of Christ connected to that system.  It’s designed to keep you walled out of the experience of God’s true divine glory.

The world has labeled you a fool because you believe God did awesome mighty things on behalf of Biblical men & women you will never meet or know (not on this side of Heaven, anyway).

Other Believers label you a fool when you start talking about Believing God & relying on Him to lead, sustain, & Father you in the nontraditional ways.  (Nontraditional meaning any way “culture” & “folk religion” doesn’t endorse).

Yeah, yeah, yeah…but what’s this post really about???Unknown-5

Ok…Here it is in a nutshell: Fearful people are not faith full people.  Their indoctrination is defined as a dependency on the natural, the reasonable & controllable.  God is none of these descriptives.  They are doing what they’re supposed to do, doubt.

My concern is you!!!

It’s about when YOU know that you know that YOU heard from God.  When the fence posts line up as all those “coincidences” you can’t ignore.  When you know what to do, how to do it, and you want to do it, but you still back out.

You wanna know why?

I’ll tell you why: it’s because the oppressive controlling fearful culture has lodged in your heart & optimized itself in the deprogramming of your God-made-self authenticity & audacity.  All the “common sense” adages weave themselves together and erupt in your mouth so that the main one who ends up calling you a fool, is you.

You and God are the only “name callers” of your Self that matter.  And because God calls you forgiven & righteous, you are the labeler you have to get past….

Who you call you is directly related to Who you call God.  The most powerful place to be real is in the heart of ourselves.  How do the responses to these questions rattle off in your inner self?

  • Is He able, still?
  • Is He willing, now?
  • Is He for you, no matter what you’ve done or do?
  • Is He everywhere, really?
  • Does He know it all, or not?
  • Is He King, today?
  • Does He promote, provide, and prearrange the mess before it ever got messy?
  • And perhaps the most pressing question: Is He God, alone?

If you are to ever wholeheartedly embrace the Word & Will of God for your life, know this: common sense kills faith.

That statement isn’t about living carelessly, foolishly or recklessly.  You’re not that person anyway.  It’s about putting stock, faith & trust in God, to let Him be Who you say He is in & over your life.

It’s about being willing to let go of the reigns, of the control you believe you have to have over everything concerning you.  That is, and will always be, about you sitting on the throne of your own life… you living by the works of your own hands.

Two Questions For You:

  1. Doesn’t you living by your own rule render way too small a life for you?
  2. Can you not see what a stumbling block that kind of rule is to Psalm 138:8…?

The Lord will perfect that which concerns me: Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands.

Let common sense stay common.  Live by faith in God, which means to, undoubtedly, live outside the lines.

Thanks for your post, I’m in the process of disguishing my inner faith from common sense, Sometimes it’s hard especially when I’m experiencing hard times. Therefore, I find myself in deep meditation most of the day. This article definitely blended in with my present state of mind.

    • You’re very welcome James. And thank you for sharing, especially about the hard times piece. That’s been true for me as well. It’s so easy to claim we’re trusting God when times are good. The second they turn though we start to panic and hurry into these urgent rescue missions…which to be honest, can many times serve to make our situations worse.

Your practice of meditation is awesome and exactly what’s needed in situations like these: silence, stillness for presence of mind. Only then are we truly present with the Spirit. Then we are open to be reminded that we’re surrounded by the care of a Loving God Who not only knows all about it, but is also in total control.

How blessed we all are to serve and be children of an attentive Father like God!!!

Thanks again for sharing your vulnerability & wisdom, James. God bless you and keep you in remembrance that the trials, tribulations & persecutions of today are the seeds that grow tomorrow’s bountiful harvest!!!

      Much Love,
      Alaina
