Stop focusing on what seems undone, unfulfilled & unfair. And this isn’t exactly the easiest thing on the planet to do. It’s because we’re so shaped by the criticism of what we’ve left undone rather than the celebration of our accomplishments. You spent hours doing all your work with only the imperfections pointed out. You make all A’s & B’s and one D and “You made a D?!?” is what echoes through the house. For the most part, we’re trained to focus on the negative.
And then there’s our tendency to harp on whatever will keep us in the familiar emotional place of feeling unfulfilled. The opposite of unfulfillment is gratitude. God has been working with me a lot lately on this one. Telling me that gratefulness is about awareness…it’s something I have to take a moment, actively choose, and acknowledge. Even when the world seems to be falling down around us, there’s always something to be grateful for: breath; presence of mind; Christ, the Lord of New Beginnings.
We’re so over saturated with the marketing of products, services, & affiliations. We live our lives by instantaneous fulfillment. But the danger in that is, an instant is, and can ever only be, an instant. When our highs wear off of from the impulsive purchases & our adrenaline rush from the VIP connection has subsided we’re left with that emotional state that never left in the first place: feeling unfulfilled.
We hate that feeling. It scares us. And so we run to television programming, movies, music, food, drugs, sex, church, shopping, gossiping on the phone…something, anything to help us avoid the truth of what we’re really missing: a self developed; a mind renewed; a heart purified, strengthened, emboldened by the Word & Love & Presence of the God & Creator of All.
And it’s not even that we shouldn’t have possession of all the best The Market has to offer. God has promised to give us ALL that if we’d just pursue His righteousness first. Our Father wants us to have the best things, and His righteousness ensures those things won’t have us.
And what about the unfairness of this whole thing called life? We work where we don’t want to work; live in one place & long for another; about wreck our cars watching the one we really want cruise by; date/marry/conjugate with one person while wishing they were somebody else; or maybe we’re alone and ache to be around others whose relationship looks anything remotely like the one we want for ourselves. The list goes on forever, but whatever your particular equation equates to, there’s a product of unfairness somewhere in your math.
There’s a relearning to all this…a course we could perhaps call Kingdom Mathematics:
Awareness + Patience = Fulfillment.
It is fair…it can only be fair because we chose it. Isaiah 6:8 reads: Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. We are the choosers of our circumstances. And we chose these because they held the necessary obstacles we had to learn, trust & believe our way out of in order to complete our earthly assignments. Whatever the tread on our paths may be, it was all necessary for the assignment we came here to complete.
Without my past looking exactly like does, I could never teach what I’ve been sent to teach. We have to become aware of the depth, breadth & width of what God has done, and is yet doing in, for, and through man. Nothing is by accident. Life is not a game. Just ask for the wisdom & insight to know why you’ve been where you’ve been, done what you’ve done, and are where you are.
Then indulge yourself in the gift called YOU by committing to the mind renewal process, which will more patience than you ever dreamed could be a product of you…..and in essence, it is. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit…He is the Tree from where we pluck to eat the fruit of patience.
